Voice Training

Peter Stewart specialises in training presenters and news anchors for the BBC. Clients include staff from all the radio networks (as diverse as 1Xtra to Radio 3, from the Asian Network to Farming Today) as well as regional radio and TV, network TV news and other programmes such as Panorama, whose presenters he advises before a programme and during the record.

In July 2006 he was commissioned by GCap (who own the majority of the UK’s commercial radio stations) to advise on training every newsreader at their 157 radio stations, with a total audience of 16 million. In the same month the BBC Press Office commissioned him to train their staff in effective communication techniques.

Peter also writes on voice techniques, most recently for The Stage (June 2006) and in his new book 'Essential Radio Skills' (publ. A&C Black, Sept 2006), and has had a weekly column on presentation issues in the trade publication The Radio Magazine, since 2001.

Peter’s been a newsreader and presenter on dozens of radio stations, national and local, for the BBC and commercial stations. He’s been the voice of several BBC local stations' promotional trails, for Tempo Superstores and Inflight news (Virgin Atlantic flights between London Heathrow and the United States).

He’s the recipient of the prestigious New York Radio Award for News Presentation and is now British Chairman of Judges for the same category.

"The main difference with radio work is projection. When TV presenters come to me they're often throwing their voice too much, as though they're speaking to the camera-person, ten or 20 feet away. But on radio you're often sitting alone..."

Success is not only due to the relevance of a message – it’s also about how clearly that message is communicated.

After years as a broadcaster, and now as a trainer of presenters and newsreaders for the BBC, I’m uniquely placed to know how to inspire people to achieve greater confidence and credibility by improving the sound of their voice.

I can show how to be a stress-free speaker, how to develop a warm and friendly voice that puts people at their ease, how to eliminate annoying ‘verbal viruses’, how to hold an audience’s attention and, critically, how to read the written word so it sounds conversational (a huge bonus for board meetings and presentations).

"Done a voice-over and not happy with the popping and clicking going on? Or completed an interview and wanted to do it all over again because you’re not happy with the result?..."

August 2006 - Lead trainer for GCap Media's Newsreading Masterclass,

part of their Journalists' Academy, to train on-air staff at all their stations.

"Thank you so much for the voice-training workshop last week. The whole session was excellent from start to finish. I know how much effort you put in personally. Everyone on the course has told me they learned a lot of new skills ... That's praise indeed because we're a tough crowd! We will be changing our voice training approach in the group as a result of the workshop. Once again, thank you for an excellent day."
