Essential Radio Skills

by Peter Stewart A&C Black Sep 2006

I don't like it! If this book gets too wide a read it could put a number of consultants out of business. At last a book that talks about radio and how to do it with a common effective touch. Radio is not rocket science, it's just about communication. Do the simple things well and the difficult things brilliantly. This shows you how to do both while avoiding the common mistakes and will encourage your listeners to tune in for longer.

John Myers - Chief Executive - GMG Radio Group

The perfect guide for anyone who wants to get on in this ever-changing and challenging media.

Bob Shennan Controller, BBC Radio 5 Live

A rich repository of real, practical experience - for which, as ever, there is no substitute

Pat Loughrey - Director - BBC Nations & Regions

I don't care what the level of experience - the one thing everyone involved in radio can benefit from is to stop, get off the treadmill, stand back and look at what we're doing, how we're doing it, why we're doing it, and different ways of doing it. This book takes the lid off all those areas for those of us in radio, and for those wanting to climb in.

Martin Campbell - Head of Radio Contents and Standards - Ofcom, the independent regulator for UK radio

Building a career in radio often requires a slice of good luck - but you absolutely need a personal strategy based on learning. No-one becomes brilliant by accident. Study the ideas and tips in this book - put them into practice and get some coaching feedback on how you've done. This will provide you with the first foundation stone in your life-long radio learning.

Steve Orchard - Former breakfast DJ, now Operations Director for the UK's largest radio company - GCap Media

Peter is a first rate broadcast trainer. His courses here at the Commercial Radio Centre always attracted top marks from attendees. His knowledge of and passion for radio are evidenced on every page of this excellent book.

Paul Brown - CEO CRCA, The Commercial Radio Companies Assoc

I wish you'd written it 30 years ago - I wouldn't then have made quite so many gruesome mistakes learning my trade! If TV has " water cooler" moments, then great radio has "can't get out of the car" moments - and the more your book inspires people to produce radio of that quality, the better - best of luck!
